He was ordained as a Theravada Bhikkhu in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and later acquired his Master's and Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Paris Sorbonne. He did his postdoctoral study on Buddhist Vinaya at the Ecole Pratiques des Hautes Etudes (Section IV), Sorbonne University in Paris. He is currently the Dean of the Frankfurt Buddhist Academy. Venerable Dhammaratana has worked for UNESCO and other international Buddhist, cultural, and academic organizations, and has received an honorary doctorate from MCU University in Thailand as well as a gold medal from the Bangladesh government. Taking refuge in the Dharma entails accepting the Buddha's teachings and allowing guidance for one's life. Taking refuge in the Sangha shows respect and support for the monastic community, which helps to sustain and disseminate the Buddha's teachings.<\/p><p>Among the Five Precepts are the prohibitions against taking life, stealing, sexual misbehaviour, false speech, and intoxicants.
